The International One Metre class is the fastest-growing class in the world. This class is distinct and different in purpose than the open, unrestricted classes in the AMYA as a simpler, less expensive boat. Under AMYA rules the IOM is a Developmental Class Boat.
The International One Metre class has a one-design rig, and has minimum weights on the keel and overall, and restricts the hull material. The effect of these differences to open classes is that the typical high costs of lighter weight, and more expensive materials and manufacturing processes, keeps the costs on an IOM reasonable as a low cost, yet high performance boat.
This allows designers and builders a chance to design and build with little concern that they are building in a disadvantage due to weight. This is a feature not found in any existing AMYA class, and is one of the reasons that the class is so popular around the world.
The Trinity River Yacht Club is the founding club of record for this class in the United States with Rob Davis, TRYC member, as the founding AMYA Class Secretary.
The TRYC annually hosts the Dallas Blowout Regatta, one of the premiere racing events annually for the US IOM Class.
In addition, the TRYC has hosted many other prestigious national and regional events for the IOM.
